Rob Matthews

The Madonna paintings are connected to a lot of work that I have made in relationship to political events of the Middle East over the past 10 years. A number of pieces that I have made have been specific and pointed at singular events or people. That is not the case with these Madonnas. They are both formally rooted in abstracting a single Byzantine Madonna icon panel. The linear structure is repeated, but every other variable changes from one piece to the other. I can make work within the timeline of developing news, but sometimes, in order to preserve my sanity, it’s important to take the 20,000 foot view and tap into the eternal. I consider these to be hopeful, dreamlike paintings.
