Green and White
Carlyle Wolfe Lee
Green and White
2019 | oil on panel | 36x48 | $6000

Throughout her nearly 20-year career Carlyle Wolfe Lee has made pencil drawings, contour sketches, and large-scale paintings of closely studied shapes, colors, and forms of all things plants. Her densely layered paintings on panel give you the sensation of being lovingly embraced by a meadow of happy, thriving flowers, and her sketches whisper vespers of grace and patience. We have Lee to thank for helping us regularly destress.

Rather than her panels be the “final product” and the work before it “preparatory,” Lee invites artistry and mindfulness into each moment of her artistic practice. Her pencil contour drawings are meditations on the progressive, slow changes of daily life but those that ultimately lead to us to the whole. From these, stencils are created for her colorful panel paintings. Texture is a key element in Lee’s panel pieces, too. Gold or silver foil play hide and seek among the layers, and the overlapping edges of the cut-out shapes are visible just enough to tempt you to take a step into these wondrous scenes.

Carlyle Wolfe Lee received her BFA in Painting from the University of Mississippi and her MFA in Painting and Drawing from Louisiana State University. Her work was recently selected for The Art in Embassies Program at the US Embassy in Maputo, Mozambique. She has exhibited work throughout the South including, The Dixon Gallery and Gardens, the Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Center, the University of Charleston, the Shaw Center for the Arts Baton Rouge, the Mississippi Museum of Art, the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art, the University of Mississippi Museum, and Arkansas Art Center.
